About Sproat Mountain Lookout

The Sproat Mountain Lookout is a historic fire lookout tower, maintained by the Revelstoke ATV Club. There is interpretive signage and artifacts detailing what it would be like to be a fire tower attendant.

There are two ways to access the lookout building:

There is a 7.5km trail for ORVs. The trail is maintained by the Revelstoke ATV club. The trail is open to ATVs, side by sides, and motorcycles. On-highway vehicles are NOT permitted.

There is a separate trail (3.5km, 925m elevation gain) for hikers to the fire lookout as well.

The ATV trail is closed annually from March 15 to July 15 of each year to protect early season Grizzly Bear range.

Vehicles must stay on the trail and park in the designated area at the lookout--vehicles are strictly prohibited in the alpine.

Getting there

The trailhead is approximately 36km up the Akolkolux - Dumont FSR. This is an active industrial road--using a two-way radio with resource road channels is necessary.

From Revelstoke, follow Airport Way south to the end of the pavement. Take the Akolkolux FSR past Echo Lake Recreation Site, past the turn off for McCrae Lake, and carry on the Akolkolux-Dumont FSR. The Backroad Mapbook, or other mapping tools are recommended due to the numerous branch roads and the tendency of the directional signage to go missing.
