History and culture

The shíshálh Nation describes its swiya (territory) as lying between Queens Reach in lekw'emin (Jervis Inlet) and Howe Sound, with four main historical settlements at kalpilin (Pender Harbour), ts'unay (Deserted Bay), xenichen (head of lekw'emin) and tewankw near alhtulich (Porpoise Bay) 2. The Nation's local government was created by the Sechelt Indian Band Self-Government Act (Bill C-93) 2. Its tems swiya Museum holds a large collection of artifacts, including cedar baskets, stone tools and a very old mortuary stone, and offers tours 2.

The District of Sechelt says the land was a large meeting area for shíshálh people, who have been here since time immemorial 3. BC Geographical Names records that the town's name comes from the Nation, that the non-Native community grew from an 1890s hotel and store development beside ch'átlich, where a Roman Catholic mission was established in 1868, and that a Sechelt post office opened in 1896 1. The Village of Sechelt was incorporated on February 15, 1956 and became a District municipality on June 30, 1986 3.
