How campgrounds are run in Alberta
Facility Operating Agreements
Alberta Parks signs Facility Operating Agreements, usually for five to ten years, with companies that run campgrounds and nearby day-use areas. The operator collects approved fees and does its own hiring. Concessions (stores, food, rentals) and service contracts (maintenance, cleaning) are separate arrangements.
Alberta Parks Host Program
Volunteer hosts bring a self-contained camping unit and help with visitor information, reporting concerns and light maintenance. Placements last four weeks to four months, about five hours a day, five days a week including weekends. It is unpaid; the next applications open in February 2027.
Forestry recreation partnerships
Forestry companies manage some forest campgrounds. West Fraser oversees the Foothills Recreation Management Association (24 campgrounds near Hinton, Edson, Robb and Cadomin) with Fox Creek Development Association as main contractor, and Blue Ridge Lumber manages five Swan Hills campgrounds. Ask the contractor, not the forestry company, about jobs.
Municipal campgrounds
Counties, municipal districts, towns and the Special Areas Board own and run their own campgrounds. Some use park hosts or on-site attendants, but terms differ by place. Check each municipality's jobs page or HR office.
Paid jobs, volunteer hosting and contracts
Paid seasonal jobs are offered by Alberta Parks and private operators such as Kananaskis Campground Services (salaried on-site managers in their own RV), Cedar & Spruce and KR Campground Maintenance. Volunteer hosting runs through the Alberta Parks Host Program. Operating tenders (Facility Operating Agreements) go through Alberta Purchasing Connection, and the Special Areas Board has used contracts for resident campground attendants.
