How campgrounds are run in British Columbia
BC Parks uses private operators
BC Parks awards contracts of three to ten years to companies that run individual parks or groups of parks. Those companies hire attendants, patrol and maintenance staff and organize campground hosts. BC Parks sends job seekers to the operators and to the Go Camping BC job board.
Recreation Sites and Trails BC
RSTBC runs forest recreation sites through volunteer partnerships, site-operator agreements and maintenance contracts. Site operators work in a fee-for-service framework where collected fees cover allowable expenses, so read the agreement before treating it as pay. RSTBC also hires paid seasonal maintenance crews through a separate program.
Hosting comes in different forms
Some operators run unpaid host programs with a free campsite, some pay hourly wages to resident staff, and some sign independent contracts paid from a share of camping revenue. BC Parks also runs a separate backcountry host program at remote locations. Always check whether a role offers cash pay, a campsite, utilities or a revenue share, and what hours are expected.
Forest-land, regional and First Nation campgrounds
Mosaic Forest Management has 14 campgrounds on private forest land on Vancouver Island, and regional districts such as Nanaimo own campgrounds run by contractors. First Nation businesses such as Toquaht Nation's Secret Beach Campground hire their own hosts. Ask each site who actually recruits staff.
Paid jobs, volunteer hosting and contracts
Paid seasonal jobs (attendant, patrol, gatehouse, maintenance, park operator) are offered by BC Parks operating companies and the RSTBC maintenance crew program. Volunteer hosting exists with operators such as Quality Recreation, West Kootenay Park Management and Camp In BC, and in the BC Parks backcountry program. Independent contractor hosting (West Harrison's revenue share) and operating or maintenance tenders (BC Parks, RSTBC, BC Bid) also exist.
