How campgrounds are run in Yukon
Yukon Parks runs the territorial network
Yukon Parks, part of the Department of Environment, plans and operates the territorial campgrounds and recreation sites. Some sites are day use only, so check the official directory before assuming overnight camping. Phone 867-667-5648 or email [email protected] to ask who looks after a particular campground.
Some campgrounds are serviced by contractors
Individual campgrounds can be cleaned and maintained under a service contract, such as the 2022 Five Mile Lake operations and maintenance contract. Duties included daily cleaning, firewood stocking, outhouse cleaning, safety checks and talking with campers. These are business contracts, not salaried host jobs, and the public record does not always name the contractor.
Park Experience Host is a student job
The Government of Yukon's 2026 STEP student package included two Park Experience Host posts at campgrounds near Whitehorse, covering camper check-in, registration and information. STEP is for students only. Look for the next package rather than relying on the 2026 one.
First Nation procurement
Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in Community Development Corporation sought contractors to run Yukon River Campground near Dawson in 2026. That bid was limited to qualified Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in contractors and businesses. Its procurement page is where future notices appear.
City and federal campgrounds hire separately
Robert Service Campground is run by the City of Whitehorse, which posts its own jobs. Kathleen Lake in Kluane National Park is run by Parks Canada, which hires through the federal Parks Canada jobs page.
Paid jobs, volunteer hosting and contracts
Paid jobs exist with Yukon Parks (including student STEP roles), the City of Whitehorse and Parks Canada. Campground operations and maintenance are also bought through contracts and tenders, for example Five Mile Lake (2022) and Yukon River Campground (2026, THCDC). No volunteer hosting program was found in the report.
